Australia to ban synthetic rubber after ‘dramatic spike’ in deaths

Posted July 14, 2018 18:04:01 Australian Premier Mike Baird has announced plans to ban all synthetic rubber products.

The move comes after the country saw a spike in the number of synthetic rubber-related deaths.

Mr Baird said the new policy would prevent the industry from “taking the lives of our citizens.”

He said the government would also introduce a new “safe and responsible” industry standard for all new synthetic rubber produced and sold.

“There’s no justification for the use of synthetic fibres or for the manufacturing of synthetic plastics that’s so hazardous that it causes the death of people,” he said.

“If we are going to have a national ban on all new synthetics, I think it’s important to have an objective and scientifically based approach to it.”ABC/wiresTopics:health,government-and-politics,health-policy,health,diseases-and/or-disorders,healthcare-facilities,parliament,australia,nsw,brisbane-4000,newcastle-2300First posted July 14 of 2018 18.01:42Contact Sarah HigginsonMore stories from New South Wales
